Cale Parks became an underground icon as a founding member and drummer of art-rock heroes Aloha. From his Ohio youth, to years of touring, to a decade in NYC as session player and DJ, Cale turned an electronic music obsession into sleek deep house, balearic, and lounge, upholding the vibe for which he’s known. From Aloha’s Polyvinyl releases, to 2013’s slick N1–his first on Justin Miller’s Have A Killer Time–to 2015’s Lagoon Fool, the intention of every note is obvious. A string of dance tracks met global acclaim, including a sold-out 2015 vinyl release for UK-based Rothmans, Diego Maradona EP. Eddie C’s “9G” remix would not be the last; in 2016, French band Paradis remade N1 into “Contours” for its major-label debut. Crispy Reds, the new EP from Cale Parks, showcases sleek, wide-screen disco, informed as much by Herbie Hancock as by DJ Mehdi. With phased-out hi-hats, woozy vocals, and loads of locked-in congas, Crispy Reds doesn’t compromise the stylishness for which Parks has become known, while never overloading the dancefloor. Every bassline, melody, and drum fill becomes a hook deep in the pocket, coupled with a feral quality characteristic of the best dance music. Deceptively simple, the three rich new cuts, along with two remixes of the title track, appear on revered Barcelona label Apersonal–a literally and metaphorically perfect home for a flawless little club record straddling Balearic, house, and funk.
