Out of the underground scene of Trenton, NJ, comes stoner rap artist Gzooted. Born, raised, and built by the local culture and community, Gianni Samuels hopes to put her hometown on the map with Mac Miller and Tyler the Creator inspired tracks. Made of ambient, chilled out beats Gzooted includes punchy rapping with rapid-fire flow and surprisingly sweet choruses which contrast and balance her work. With tracks like More Than summing up the hardships of street life in lyrics which tackle drug use and shooting, Gzooted drops the line ‘this is more than music’ with profound accuracy. Reaching beyond mere entertainment, Gzooted takes rap’s socially conscious roots and combines them with the modern love for laid back production, all whilst remaining aware of her music’s place in wider society. Soulful and moving because of it’s rawness, her work puts these themes in front of a backdrop which includes piano and strings, further balancing beauty, aggression, and hardship. Other influences include Gym Class Heroes and Andre3000; Gzooted sits at the cutting edge of rap yet looks to her own past and the places she came from for inspiration. In tracks like Whomever, she collaborates with rapper Melaki and includes deep icy beats and trap inspired drums, whilst the more intense Johnny Gatt shows versatility and references Tupac’s Makaveli.
