Buenaventura studied at Santo Tomas University and Centro Escolar University as well as at the Gregorian Institute. He has held several teaching positions and has served as organist at the Manila Cathedral. He also served as dean of the Centro Escolar University Conservatory. Buenaventura's compositions are nationalist and employ Romantic, impressionist and contemporary styles.
