Carr studied at Auckland University as well as at the GSM in London and with Orff at the Munich Hochschule für Musik. He has won many prizes, including first prize at the Auckland Festival for the overture Mardi Gras and the Harriet Cohen International Music Award. A commission from the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation resulted in his Piano Concerto. After 1961, Carr exclusively composed with twelve-tone serial methods.
