Diamond Heist is the alias of Sweden-based, award-winning producer and mastering engineer Thomas Harsem, whose debut album Colorized, the follow-up to last year's spellbinding Piano 1 EP, is set for release on June 5. Succinct lead single ‘Damage Control’ meticulously crafts a nocturnal, dreamlike vibe, its unashamedly sentimental, Debussy-esque melody lingering long after the last note has been played. Blending an upright piano with a Moog synthesizer, it’s a welcome reminder of Mark Hollis’ immortal words, “Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note, y'know? And don't play one note unless you've got a reason to play it.” Colorized offers a multitude of such charms, its minimalist inclinations allowing the smallest details to shine, whether opener ‘Acryl’s resonant depths, ‘Back In Time’’s subtle complexity, ‘Novelty’’s gently insistent percussive nature or the atmospheric, unison pairing of synth and piano in the title track’s quietly romantic melody. More than this, Diamond Heist’s intimate chamber music – with a modern twist – provides a masterclass in how elegance and purity can cast long shadows, its mood at once admirably hopeful and yet serenely, tenderly devastating.
