Unc D is a bassist, singer and producer from Youngstown, OH. With 17 albums released between 2019 and 2024, Unc D has reached global audiences with an original blend of jazz, funk and electronic music. This specific blend of electronic jazz and funk is the result of tapping into Unc D’s heritage as an uneducated working bassist in Ohio’s jam sesh and funk scenes, while incorporating progressive and experimental electronic production via working with producer/keyboardist Thin Thicket. Inspired by Miles Davis, Unc D’s pragmatic approach is due to a philosophic focus on the method of making music, rather than the result. Early releases, such as BLDNTHNDR, were made using Garageband on an iPad Mini. With increased production capabilities, splice-editing production - seen on Bitches Brew - used first-takes and long form improvisation to create single-length pieces. In 2022, Unc D invented MUMBLE JAZZ: mixing jazz scatting with autotune and modern hip hop. MUMBLE JAZZ allowed Unc D to be a lead voice for the first time- previously limited to bass. In 2022 and 2023 Unc D released a new song weekly. This prolific output allowed for the discography to balance a variety of styles, including lofi, MUMBLE JAZZ, and jazz-funk - highlighted in the tribute to his hometown, “F’Uncstown.” In 2024, Unc D & Thin Thicket are developing ‘Loop There It Is,” which uses drum machines and live looping to improvise electronic music.
