Biography

Gasoline Monk is a producer/multi-instrumentalist from Boston, who works under the influence of psychedelia, hip hop, Zen and surrealism. His experiments began at thirteen in his father’s basement studio, mostly playing every instrument himself. Then came J Dilla, Flying Lotus and the understanding that a beat can be an endlessly mutating thing. At 23, Gasoline Monk left for a few years to study electronic music in Denmark. Studying with Dodebum, the jazz bloomed in his work, and he formed The Monk Batucada, producing four psych-jazz albums with a fluctuating constellation of Danish musicians. After losing a long battle with the Danish government to secure a visa, Monk moved back home to Boston. Within a couple months, he met his soulmate, and not long after their daughter was born. Now, back in the city he always ends up homesick for, he keeps the daily practice - "my zazen" - of making Gasoline Monk music, and playing keyboards for artists like Terry Borderline and Forté in the Boston hip hop underground.
