Sifonics is a singer/composer/sound designer that performs by exploring live voice recording and sample reproduction. Layers of sound are slowly built within time and culminates in a complex musical set, enriched with textures and timbers. The style is a mix between pop music and the many diverse types of Brazilian and world music. Her sonority can be characterized as electronic/experimental/tropical. Sifonics is Mariana Bahia. She is a Brazilian artist from Niterói, Rio de Janeiro and is currently based in Berlin. She experiments based on layers of superposed voices, self-designed instruments and computer. Her work is focused on a deeper understanding of self through sound making and sound reproduction mediated by the machine. She composes based on self-analysis, intuition, meditation and constant exploration of new sounds. She calls her creative process ‘Gabiarra e Caos’, which means, ‘Gambiarra and Chaos’. Gambiarra is a Brazilian word to express the use of improvised methods to solve technical problems with any materials available. She works with the materials and technology she has in hand and throws all her ideas on the table. This generates a kind of creative chaos, from which her compositions are born.
