From 1678 until his death Diletsky lived in Moscow. Prior to this he lived in the Ukraine, studied in Poland and briefly lived in Smolensk. As a composer and musicographer Diletsky wrote a treatise entitled "Musikiskaya Grammatika" which illustrated a great deal about Russian music. In the body of the work he described: 1. The strict formulas for deriving a polyphonic piece from imitated lines. 2. Contrasting music which contained an ensemble or orchestra played against a single instrument or small group of instruments.
