Godmother is critical theory in pop-music drag. A non-binary identity gets turned inside-out, becoming a worldview that challenges false dichotomies such as self/other, real/artificial, sincerity/irony – with a catchy melody and a beat, in five minutes or less. The mutant brainchild of singer-songwriter Josephinex, Godmother weaves together art rock, Baroque pop, glam, R&B and echoes of club music for a Technicolor, transgenre patchwork. With a style that’s too anachronistic to be current, yet too irreverent to be retro, Josephinex calls their songs “oldies but newbies”. Godmother's acclaimed and eclectic 2018 self-titled debut album (“a good-humored and fearless dive into dystopia” according to PopMatters) was accompanied by a release concert at the Roter Salon of the Volksbühne Berlin. They have also performed throughout Germany, France and Switzerland as well as in London and New York City, from dingy basement clubs to prestigious arts festivals. Over the years, the band has shared the stage with like-minded visionaries such as Perfume Genius and Sean Nicholas Savage, spreading their gospel the world over.
