Starting as a solo project in 2006, founder Tim gained attention for his brand of hazy, shoegazy electronica before recording a debut album, Hope Dies Last for US label n5MD in 2011. After a long hiatus, daughter, Bel, joined and together they recorded the album The Longest Sleep Through the Darkest Days (n5MD, 2018), which continued their trademark lush, reverb-soaked sound The duo have honed their sound to encompass post-rock, shoegaze and neo-claasical influences to produce a music that manages to be both melancholy and euphoric, nostalgic and hopeful. Their new album Gestural Abstractions (n5MD, 2021) finds Winterlight in an expansive mood. The duo's palette of sounds has developed to include piano, harmonium, orchestrations and even concertina. Stripping back the multiple layers of reverb-soaked synths and guitars has yielded a more focused sound that lets each melody shine through. Still ever melancholy; yet there is more space to let in air and light.
