Biography

Jana Jonasova is a prominent Czech soprano. In addition to making frequent appearances as a concert and recital singer, she is on the roster of the Prague National Theater, the leading opera house in the Republic of Czechoslovakia. She has a wide range that extends three octaves without noticeable breaks. This suits her for coloratura roles involving quick changes in register. She is particularly noted for her Mozart singing; one of her starring roles is Despina in Così fan tutte. In the National Theater, she sings such parts as First Lady in The Magic Flute, Barena in Janacek's Jenufa, Countess Ceprano in Verdi's Rigoletto, Nella in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, and Chocholka the Hen in Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen. There is the potential to confuse her with two other prominent Czech singers, Jana Hanusova and Hana Jonasova; there have even been occasions when Hana Jonasova has sung Second Lady in The Magic Flute to Jana Jonasova's First Lady.
