Ro "Morikawa" Woodford is a Black-Filipino American artist, producer, and songwriter based in Tokyo. He/His. Born into a military family with ties to Okinawa, some of the only consistent aspects of Ro's life were his love of piano, science, poetry, and the Japanese language. Using the early months of the 2020 quarantine as a catalyst of inspiration, he released his debut album Hindsight 20/20 with no training, just for fun in his loft. Evolving with each project, Ro's path of mastery of the craft is evident as time moves on. He prides himself in the truth of his lyrics and finding creative ways to incorporate his all into his songwriting and instrumentals, from vulnerable slow R&B to gritty or high energy alternative hip-hop. Ro has also developed a distinct style of improvisation and emotional chord progressions can be felt throughout his production, which coincides with his warm melodic vocals. You can be sure in knowing every Ro Beat was carefully crafted using his piano and/or a handpicked sample. And occasionally his beloved uke (gifted by one of his biggest fans). Some musical influences that inspire Ro include Raleigh Ritchie, Noname, Cam O'bi, Kota the Friend, KAMAUU, Smino, and the Spillage Village collective. And in case you were wondering, "Morikawa" is a nearly direct translation of "Woodford" that Ro was called by his early Japanese friends long ago, that has evolved to be another integral part of his Tokyo identity.
