VACATETHEROOM is the electronic project of Melbourne-based composer and musician Jonah Gabriel and is the culmination of years working under different names and honing his musical craft. Inspired initially by Boards of Canada, Jon Hopkins, and Surgeon, VACATETHEROOM constructs a sonic world that could be created by no one else, with evolving and hypnotic rhythms flanked by warm and driven analog synths. The project was born from a six-month period in Canada, as a means of escaping his immediate environment and finding a place to feel secure and safe. His debut EP, 2019’s “Monde Souterrain”, was created during these sessions as part of an academic exercise to constrain workflow by using rudimentary online software. The exercise proved successful, encouraging a new fascination with layering a plethora of sonic textures, and seemingly becoming more immersed as more time was spent on it. It comes as no surprise that “Monde Souterrain” translates to “the underworld”: it served a surgery of his own process. Already turning heads in the Melbourne music scene with a remix for Daniel Joshua’s “Hivemind”, VACATETHEROOM seems sure to dominate dance floors, with exciting new material on its way. His latest EP, "Telecommunication" is a characteristically dark mixture of cavernous ambience, warm analog synths, and driving garage-inspired rhythms. Telecommunication conjures a haunted haze, drawing the listener in through its hypnotic and thoughtful web of sound.
