Biography

Voka Gentle are William J. Stokes and twins Imogen and Ellie Mason. With the studio as their playground at one end and a live show bursting with raw, manic energy at the other, the trio craft viscerally off-kilter songs infused with motorik electronics, intricate psychedelia and experimental sound design. Having diligently honed their sound across two underground album releases, Voka Gentle are fast making a name for themselves among some of the most respected figures in their genre: after opening for the Flaming Lips in London at their anniversary show of seminal album The Soft Bulletin, Wayne Coyne enthusiastically appeared as a guest vocalist on subsequent release WRITHING!; a record described by Bombay Bicycle Club’s Jack Steadman as “the kind of album I wish that I had made” and dubbed “one of the underground albums of the year” by Loud And Quiet magazine. Voka Gentle were also invited to contribute two remixes to the expanded edition of Reset by Animal Collective’s Panda Bear and Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, who subsequently invited the band to open their last UK show in support of the album at London’s Heaven. 2023’s SXSW festival saw the band play a spate of packed shows, headlining a bill featuring Swans’ Thor Harris and Wire’s Colin Newman at Austin’s Hotel Vegas and earning themselves a place in Variety magazine’s Best Of SXSW 2023 (“your new favourite band”).
