Biography

A lifelong musician and drummer of several bands, Jonathan Freihofer started making dubstep and glitch pop tracks on his computer in 2008 after borrowing a friend’s keyboard. What first started as a pursuit of creative control and freedom (compared to playing in bands) quickly turned into an obsession of blending art and science–manipulating technology to create sound in space. When Freihofer moved from Springfield Missouri to Portland Oregon in 2010, his tracks took a more club focused approach as he started going to various parties with friends. He started DJing and collecting records at this time and dived deep into house, dub, techno, and more. In 2013 he moved to Brooklyn, New York to connect with the thriving dance and club scene, started a label and radio show with a buddy called Ethereal Beatbox. The duo hosted a few residency nights for several years, most notably at Bushwick’s legendary Bossa Nova Civic Club. While living in Brooklyn, Freihofer received messages on Soundcloud and befriended both Charlie Perez-Tlatenchi, owner of alternative dance NY label Pastel Voids and Morgane Lhote, former keyboardist of Stereolab turned producer (Hologram Teen). This led to several collaborations, productions, studio work, and releases– expanding his musical career into new avenues. In 2015 Freihofer started making music under the alias Jonny Oso, a spinoff of a childhood nickname as an avenue to play more loose and carefree styles. The name stuck ever since.
