Fl3a is, by every metric, a rising star. In just over a year, he’s gone from just trying out his flow with his brothers (who also rap, and he credits brother Lepew with inspiring him to start rapping) to getting featured on The FADER’s Rap Report. But, let him tell it: "My first song doesn't even sound like me [...] I’m more energetic. Once you get that comfortability in the booth, everything changes." That at-home-in-the-studio feeling is evident on his most recent single, “Popeyes”, an ode to his lifestyle and some of his favorite things. Its piano riff over Detroit-style beats reflects the luxurious fits and Lanvin glasses he wears as he dances surrounded by mariachi players, filmed in an actual Newark Popeyes. Newark, specifically the iconic Isabella Ave, is his home base, and its residents feature in some way in all of his songs. That’s what sets Fl3a apart: everything he raps is “about people from that area, what we’ve been through. I'm either talking about myself or them.”
