Boretz studied at Brandeis University and at Princeton with Babbitt and Sessions. He was the music critic for =The Nation= and edited =Perspectives of New Music=. He has also served as professor at several universities. Boretz's compositions are deeply structured in rhythm, harmony and texture. =Meta-Variations= is his most significant theoretical work.
