Biography

McKenzie Lockhart is a singer-songwriter from Florence, AL. Growing up just across the river in Muscle Shoals, she has been surrounded with music history since childhood and could not escape the need to sing and create. In 2016, Lockhart released her debut EP, Interlaced, and introduced herself as a songwriter with heart and a desire to write about lived experience - even seemingly mundane experiences (“Ball & Chain”). Each song is a story to be shared. As a follow-up to Interlaced, Lockhart leaned into her live acoustic performance roots and recorded a live EP with her husband in her home. Suburbs (2018) was full of more stories of marriage, love, loss of faith, and the fight to hang on to faith. These, however, were delivered simply with an acoustic guitar and Lockhart’s own voice as well as a feature from friend Andy Baxter (Penny & Sparrow) on the track “Spent.” In 2020, as many artists had to find a new way to make music happen amidst a global pandemic, Lockhart managed to raise funds to record a full length record. More songs. More stories. She describes her goal as a “song-forward and vocal-forward project” featuring more Americana style instrumentation and implementing live performance alongside studio production which captures the emotion of her songwriting so well. Starting with the first single, “Sleeping Mad,” (to release April 16, 2021), she hopes to unfold a whole record of songs worth singing.
