New Orleans is a complicated place. Things don’t happen overnight – they percolate. Over the years, we’re blessed to hear the sounds, see the art, and feel the culture as bystanders peering through the looking glass. Just know, these things weren’t instantaneous – they were the result of a city rife with missteps, blackouts and glorious chaos. Without the madness, the fruit wouldn’t taste as sweet. It’s just how New Orleans does. Penguins with Knives is the newest thread in the quilt that is the New Orleans musical landscape. They’re a band of brothers, but misfits just the same. The songs aren’t guys in a room, they’re statements to what happens when the air is so thick it’s assaulting, the guitars are turned up a little too much, or when the whiskey grabs a hold of your pen and tells you to bleed. True to the eclectic Louisiana stylebook, Penguins with Knives aren’t afraid to take chances. They experiment with the many shades of heavy metal, punk, and even some hardcore to employ songs that hammer a theme – sometimes fast and driving, while others, slow and low. Their sound is a mixture of aggressive soul, dirty blues, and Deep South conviction with the amplifiers cranked to overdrive. The nights are filled with magic, but these moments are for distorted guitars and a little too much of a good time. Penguins with Knives have arrived.
