Biography

David Long is a music maker from New Zealand. He played first in the Braille Collective (Six Volts, Rabbitlock and Jungle Suite) and was a founding member of The Mutton Birds with whom he made 3 albums over 7 years in the 1990s. He makes music for film and dance and plays with odd bands - as well as releasing his own albums. He is about to released Ash and Bone, in February 2022 and I'll Hum the First Few Bars in 2023, both through Rattle Records. He has composed scores for over twenty feature films including The Luminaries and McLaren (both of which won an APRA Silver Scroll award for Best Original Music), The Ground We Won, Gardening with Soul, Beyond the Edge, and additional score for Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones. For the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey he wrote (in collaboration with Plan 9 Music) ‘Misty Mountain’. He wrote music and created musical sound design for Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong (also with Plan 9 Music). David has had a long association with contemporary dance. He has written many pieces for New Zealand’s pre-eminent choreographer Douglas Wright and, in 2020/21 composed for Sean MacDonald's Ngā Wai and Tupua Tugafua's Ciggy Butts in the Sand. He recently composed for Tupua's Little Bits and Add Ons in April 2023. David is also part of The Labcoats, a six piece experimental group, and Teeth, an easy-listening noise rock band with Luke Buda, Tom Callwood and Anthony Donaldson. website - davidlongnz.com
