Fieldings is an experimental pop project by producer Lucy Hearn. With it she mixes found sound, layered vocals, synths and guitars into kaleidoscopic and unexpectedly catchy pieces described as the kind of “intriguing folk-pop songs many songwriters spend their whole careers searching for”. Fieldings has been exploratory from the outset. Songs were ‘slow released’ via wooden sculptures hung in public parks, and an early show consisted of Hearn improvising songs live from a Twitter feed. The culmination of this approach was ‘Wild Release’, an album of colorful, low-budget electro ripe with archival sound ripped from YouTube. Hearn has continued in this vein since, collaborating with film composers to create club tracks, curating the ‘Strange Cuts’ party in both Sydney and Brooklyn, and traversing considerable sonic terrain in her own music, from the woozy dream-pop of ‘Soft Tissue’ (2017) to the wiry garage folk of ‘It’s All You, Cookie’ (2019). This Summer, Hearn will release ‘Unfurl’, her third album as Fieldings. Written and recorded almost exclusively between pandemic summers in her front room, it pulls psychedelic folk and chamber pop together into an album that is joyful, curious and defiant. Originally from Australia, Hearn has made Brooklyn home since 2015, playing often in the DIY scene. She has shared stages in both hemispheres with Juana Molina, Mark Kozelek, Neon Indian, Half Waif, Renata Zeigur, Holly Throsby, Evelyn Ida Morris, and others.
