Biography

Morton Block is a lifelong musician and composer from Philadelphia. From a young age, he grew up in the vibrant live music scene in 1950s Philly where he was able to hear legends like Stan Getz, Lee Morgan, Benny Goodman and many many more who inspired him to pursue jazz. His career began in his teens in the nightclubs of Philadelphia then continued around the world with a number of small groups in the Navy and up and down the East coast in the 60s after his service. He continues to perform live with his band "The Traditions". At 82, he will release his debut LP, Strange Harbors, written with his grandson and fellow trumpeter Matt Block. One of the highlights of his life as a musician has been passing on his love of music to his grandsons Matt and Jacob who are co founders of la reserve records in Brooklyn. The label represents many of the artists that Mort helped to inspire including bassist Alexander Claffy and Jason Matthews of TWYN.
