Biography

Having more than 100 recorded compositions, Peninha had his songs "Sonhos" and "Sozinho" recorded by Caetano Veloso with enormous success. Other artists who have recorded his songs are Fábio Jr., Sandra de Sá, Tim Maia, João Paulo e Daniel, Negritude Jr., Só Pra Contrariar, Alcione, José Augusto, Paul Mauriat, Elymar Santos, Wando, Marisa Monte, Mina, Paulinho Moska, Raça Negra, Roupa Nova, Roberta Miranda, Daniel, and Renata Arruda. In 1972 he recorded a single through RCA. After other ignored works, he had a big hit with "Sonhos," which sold 400,000 copies after having been included in the soundtrack of the Rede Globo soap opera Sem Lenço, Sem Documento (1977). The song had several re-recordings, including one by Caetano Veloso in 1982. It was also recorded in Spanish, remaining for six months at number one on the Argentinean charts. "Sozinho," again recorded by Caetano (Prenda Minha), was the theme of the TV Globo soap opera Suave Veneno and sold 1,000,000 copies in 1999. Peninha also had reasonable success as an interpreter with "Que Pena" (Peninha) and "Amo Você" (Luiz Guedes/Thomas Roth). Other songs of his included in soap operas are "Que Pena" (TV Globo's O Astro, 1979), "Vou Levando a Vida" (TV Globo's Zazá, 1997), and "Por eu Ter me Machucado" (TV Globo's A Indomada, 1997). Peninha also won three Sharp prizes: fourth edition as best album (Peninha); eighth edition as best song ("Alma Gêmea," recorded by Fábio Jr.); and tenth edition as best song ("Sozinha," recorded by Sandra de Sá). Perinha was nominated for the 11th edition of the prize as best song ("Outra Onda" and "Muda") and as best singer. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
