Sue Sandal is the music project of Detroit-based songwriter/musician J. Thomas. The recording project has drawn comparisons to Fox Academy, Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens, various slowcore artists, and Thee Oh Sees’ Psychedelic Folk album Grave Blockers. Sue Sandal quietly debuted in 2020 following Thomas' departure from the Detroit dream pop outfit, Who Boy, which he co-founded in 2018. Thomas' rough-around-the-edges debut Nobody Fucks With Sue Sandal presents a warbled, minimalistic, and bleak collection of folk songs. It nods to Traditional Pop / Jazz (Open Sore 140) saharan blues (Talons of Love), and channels Nick Drake (Only My Best Self). May 2021 brought Ash On My Dashboard, Stash In The Chimney, the first full-length Sue Sandal LP. It stands as Thomas’ most sonically varied collection of songs to date. The lyrics delve into themes such as brain parasites (Operatives), addiction (I Wanna Be A Sine) and neoliberalism (Buy N Sell). The album is supported by a range of auditory textures— ambient to in-your-face; earthy to mechanical. The Sue Sandal touring lineup has featured Sean MacKillop (Who Boy, seanymack), along with Alex Kolcheff and Nate Zonnevylle, both members of the Ann Arbor melodic hardcore band Tried. Sue Sandal has shared stages with other Michigan indie acts such as Dirt Room and Raw Honey.
