Biography

Christopher Barrett is known as one of Britain’s most distinctive tuba players, band leaders, and producers. Born in 1987 near Liverpool, he graduated from The Royal College of Music, London in 2010. Chris has forged a unique musical path through his idiosyncratic approach to the instrument, playing with ensembles ranging from The London Philharmonic Orchestra to Mobo award-winning Sons of Kemet, Mercury Prize nominated SEED Ensemble, and chart-topping Sam and the Womp. He can be heard on releases by David Gray, Sigma, and Duke Dumont, amongst many others.
Chris has produced several albums through the PTC Record Label, featuring some one the UK’s finest improvisers performing his settings of William Blake and WB Yeats’ poems (Phaze Theory), and purely improvised pieces (The Holotropics). He is widely known for the soundscapes he creates on the electric tuba and has explored the instrument in settings as varied as with Cosmo Sheldrake at Hackney EartH, and Arthur Lea at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London.

As a composer, Chris has had works performed at The London Jazz Festival and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 with his ensemble Phaze Theory.
