Biography

Born into a musical family, Charu Hariharan is a multi-faceted musician - a percussionist, singer and composer. She has been exposed to music from her infant years and learnt Carnatic vocal initially under her grandfather, Sri Bhagavatheeswara Iyer and later under her mother Dr. B Arundhathi. Charu had equal flair for percussion and began learning mridangam under her guru Sri Mannarkoil J. Balaji since she was 10 years old. She was the first female to be awarded the CCRT scholarship for Mridangam and started performing for concerts since the age of 14. Charu started travelling abroad since 2005, accompanying her mother on Kanjira for a tour in Nigeria and has been collaborating with various artists around the globe since. She was a percussionist in the quartet led by Slide Guitarist and Grammy Nominee Pt. Debashish Bhattacharya named ‘O! Shakuntala’. She is a part of 'Världens Band', a world folk ensemble band of 14 musicians, founded in Sweden. Charu has performed with musicians from around the world such as Ale Möller (SWE), Rene and Marco Lacaille (FRA), Mats Öberg (SWE), Jonas Knutsson (SWE), David Xirgu (SPN), Gal Maestro (ISRAEL), Peter Rousu (SWE), Mohini Dey (IND), Shweta Mohan (IND), Stephen Devassy (IND), Sukkanya Ramgopal (IND), Anuradha Sriram (IND), Rajhesh Vaidya (IND) to name a few. Her recent release is 'Flight of Joy' (2020) featuring drummer Panos Vassilopoulos (GRE), pianist Julian Schoming (USA) and bassist Vagu Mazan (IND)
