After the demise of his chart topping 1960’s jazz, R&B combo 'Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll and The Trinity', Auger was still determined to develop his idea of a bridging differing musical worlds, fusing R&B, jazz, rock and funk, but as that seemed to be going in the opposite direction of the prevailing commercial tide, was the quickest way to oblivion – hence his new groups name. From the 1970 self-titled heavy jazz-rock debut to the jazz fusion, Latin and disco tinged Reinforcements from 1975 – this process of musical progression was driven forward by the groups’ evolving line up, which included guitarists Jim Mullen and Jack Mills, drummers Robbie McIntosh and Steve Ferrone, bassists Barry Dean and Clive Chaman, plus vocalist Alex Ligertwood. This unique experimentation culminated in rhythm infused jazz funk that united Black and white ’70s audiences – especially in the US with 2 of the groups albums simultaneously charting on the Billboard Jazz, Rock and R&B charts, the group being personally invited to open up US tours for both Herbie Hancock’s Head Hunters and Earth Wind & Fire. In mid 90’s, various reissues and a relaunched touring band saw Auger crowned ‘The Godfather Of Acid Jazz’. In the 2000’s, Alex Ligertwood re-joined the group bringing his amazing voice back to the fold, so Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express continued to tour and record, powered on by Brian’s fiery, driven and unique keyboards and his pioneering musical vision.
