Biography

Love the Color of Your Butterfly, is the title and driving aesthetic of Janinah’s proverbial lifetime in the making debut album. It’s a richly eclectic collection sharing an emotionally authentic journey of musical emancipation by tapping into all of the grand musical elements of her life and career, including opera, art song, oratorio and the American indigenous music genres spirituals, blues, jazz, and soul. Fashioning a fanciful but hard-hitting narrative via re-imaginings of the works of Puccini, Duke Ellington, Donny Hathaway, Cole Porter, Fats Waller, Sade and others, the singer invites us along as she retraces her steps from her formative years in L.A. to her time at Spelman College (where she majored in vocal performance and participated in the school’s elite jazz ensemble led by saxophonist Joe Jennings), the Eastman School of Music, summer studies in Italy, finding success on Broadway and in countless other American opera houses, namely The Metropolitan Opera, absorbing the sights and sounds of living in Harlem for 15 years and residing abroad while appearing on countless international stages.
