Biography

Electronic music producer and drummer Zachary Shigeto Saginaw, aka Shigeto, grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he picked up the drums & under the tutelage of his mentor Vincent York, began playing jazz (with lifelong collaborators Charles Trees & Josef Deas). Enmeshed in the electronic music of SE Michigan, Zach began producing & moved to NYC to attend the New School. After zigzagging between London, Ann Arbor & Brooklyn, Zach released his first EPs on Moodgadget (as both Frank Omura & Shigeto), before signing with Ghostly International, where he released his début, 2010's Full Circle. Not content to make the same record twice, the spirit of innovation & introspection lead to 2012's melodic & jazz-inflected Lineage, his last album recorded in Brooklyn. Returning to Detroit, he created 2013's No Better Time Than Now & toured relentlessly. Between 2015-2017, the influence of Detroit's collaborative spirit exploded (hinted at on Intermission), with the next 2 years devoted to creating ZGTO's A Piece of the Geto (with Bruiser Brigade's Zelooperz) & writing his fourth LP, The New Monday & finally, joining his brother Ben (of Ritual Howls) & their friend Vinnie Massimino to launch the record label Portage Garage Sounds (PGS). Detroit's musical community birthed PGS, ZGTO, the side project Spencer & Saginaw & 2018's EP Weighted, all leading to his 2019's Versions, a return to his jazz roots, with collaborators Koltay, Marcus Elliot, DJ Dez Andres, Brennan Duncan Andes & Ian Fink.
