Biography

Based in the heart of France, at the foot of the mountains just a few kilometers from Clermont-Ferrand, Jolly Joseph and Doctor Charty have been creating authentic roots/rocksteady reggae music for 15 years. They stand out with their uncompromising mixing approach called "Hardmix" and the striking vocal performances delivered by Jolly Joseph. With a 100% analog studio, magnetic tape recordings, countless recording sessions and through unwavering perseverance, the duo has crafted their own sonic universe, a world where spring reverb, phasers, high-pass filters, and space echoes reign. Inside the barn that houses the BAT Records Studio, the two producers feed, confront, channel, and inspire one another until they obtain this bubbling cocktail of mastery, audacity, and groove that defines their sonic identity. BAT Records' distinctive sound has been meticulously shaped by Jolly & Charty by drawing inspiration from the legendary Black Ark studio of Lee Perry and assimilating teachings of French dub pioneers such as Fabasstone (Dub Invaders/High Tone), Manu Anti Bypass, and Pilah Dub (Dub Addict Sound System/Kaly Live Dub). They produce an authentic reggae sound, a sound full of character, mixed and dubbed in an artisanal manner, infused with the texture and breath of analog gear.
