Biography

Gnags are a long-running Danish rock band with a sound rooted rock & roll that has changed with the times, exploring synth pop, reggae, and adult contemporary sounds. While they emerged with 1973's På Vej, Gnags have enjoyed decades of popularity, and albums like 1983's X, 1991's Lygtemandens Sang, 2008's Nørd, and 2022's På Ryggen af en Drøm have kept them on the Danish charts. Founded in 1966 in Skjern, Denmark, Gnags originally featured brothers Peter A.G. Nielsen (vocals) and Jens G. Nielsen (drums). While other bandmembers came and went over the decades, the one constant was well-known frontman Peter. After moving from Skjern to Aarhus in 1971, Gnags made their album debut with På Vej (1973). A couple years later they released their second album, Del af en Ring (1975), on the Genlyd label. A steady succession of albums on Genlyd followed, and the association between the band and the label extended with releases like Burhøns (1979), Intercity (1980), Safari (1982), X (1983), Den Blå Hund (1984), and Har de Puttet Noget I Kaffen? (1987). More albums followed on the label, including Lygtemandens Sang (1991), Øjne på Stilke (1994), and Gösta Hammerfedt (1996). In 2005 the retrospective box set Siden 66 was released on Genlyd. The original Gnags line-up reunited in 2013 for a concert. During this post-millennial period, Gnags remained popular in Denmark, and latter-day albums such as Skønhedspletter (2002) and Legepladsen (2008), Nørd (2017), Robot 'n' Roll (2019), and På Ryggen af en Drøm (2022) reached the Top Ten, if not the Top Five, of the Danish albums chart. ~ Matt Collar & Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
