Biography

Nataly Otálora: Mr. Urmetzer, You have published books, articles, radio broadcasts on music, art, philosophy. Why do you now compose? Reinhold Urmetzer: Like Umberto Eco, I want my knowledge to get practical. I really enjoy composing and working with the Matutina Ensemble Stuttgart. They are mostly international students and bored by the „modern music“ of the traditional Music-Academies. And, furthermore, they are looking for something new beyond pop music. The Matutina Ensemble Stuttgart is playing only with acoustic instruments. Why? My music shall be played, not only be heard. This is very important to me. Worldwide you’ll meet young people studying classical music with classical instruments. That shouldn't be lost. I compose exactly for this people, write notated music and scores. This great cultural achievement must not die out. Therefore my new style. I call it simply „Retro Classical“. ***** Reinhold Urmetzer, of French- German background, was born in 1950 in Saarbrücken/Germany. After a traditional education as a classical musician and teacher, he studied philosophy (Karl Otto Apel) and composition (Erhard Karkoschka) at the universities of Saarbrücken, Stuttgart, and Tübingen. He published interviews among others with philosophers such as François Lyotard and Niklas Luhmann, or with composers such as O. Messiaen, H.Lachenmann and W.Rihm. Reinhold Urmetzer lives in Stuttgart/Germany Contacts and scores: edition.weissenburg@gmail.com
