Nicolas BougaïeffCanadian-born, Berlin-based artist and producer Nicolas Bougaïeff is a hugely experienced composer whose decades-long love of club music, he has a PhD in minimal techno, and desire to challenge convention have informed genre-busting Berghain sets that expertly blend tempo and defy categorisation. After a series of releases for labels such as Trapez, Bougaïeff released his debut album The Upward Spiral (2020), following his 2017 12”, Cognitive Resonance which formed part of the NovaMute relaunch. The album explored the kind of thumping industrial techno that could be heard in the clubs he was regularly frequenting and was followed later that year by an album of remixes, Higher Up The Spiral, from the likes of Chris Liebing, Dusty Kid & Introversion. His restless quest for exploration was turned inwards for the follow up, Begin Within (2022), where he opened up entirely new sonic terrain, including the use and experimentation of his voice as an instrument. 2024 has seen Bougaïeff release a series of EPs on NovaMute. The 3 EPs released so far this year feature his distinctive use of polytemporality. Outside of his releases, he co-founded software company Liine in 2010 who engineered the Lemur music app that astronaut Alexander Gerst played on the International Space Station. More recently, Bougaïeff founded the Berlin Academy of Electronic Music and has been hosting a series of tutorials demystifying techniques such as pivot mixing.
