Biography

As an electronic producer crafting dense sample laden soundscapes, Shinra Knives (Ian Jones) is becoming increasingly adept at bringing listeners into his world. Released in December of 2021, full length album In Grief (written in the aftermath of his father's passing in a veteran's hospital) offers an aggressive exploration of mourning via maximalist sound design. The album strives to suffocate with sound, letting up for only two moments of silence throughout the entire ten-track duration. Jones' exploration into auditory worldbuilding is further enriched by the visuals he crafts to supplement the music, ranging from the warped imagery he creates for his release covers, to his video work: he directed music videos for two of In Grief's key songs, "Girl Missing" and Posture, both of which showcase live performance augmented by surreal and kinetic audio-reactive projections. He accompanied Foxing on their headlining tour in 2022, providing visuals for their live show. He also co-directed the music video for Smidley's Another Devil (feat. Shinra Knives), contributing additional vocals/sound design. Jones' released the mixtape, "you will never see heaven," an aggressive and glitchy fever dream: a dense and sinister ode to the Datpiff mixtape era. His most recent EP release, "Protect Me From What I Want," comes from the YUKU Music label, with spiraling 8-bit melodies and breakneck IDM; an experimental and fiercely engaging sound collage.
