Biography

Clever and irreverent, rapper/vocalist Payday's lyrical style is as comical and unserious as her mike skills are impressive. The musician was just 16 when she started to get attention for her vibrant tracks that could include lyrical references to anything from getting a manicure at Walmart to alphabet soup. Payday released several stand-alone tracks and mixtapes before offering up some of her best-produced material on the 2020 mixtape It's Just Music. Additional releases such as 2021's Rap in a Can (featuring a Danny Brown guest appearance) and 2022 single "White Mercedes" followed. Payday was born PJ Clark. She was just 12 years old when she started making music, writing rhymes to beats she got on the Internet and taking cues from boundary-pushing artists like Tierra Whack, Charli XCX, and Tyler, The Creator. In 2019, after releasing her debut mixtape, Payday Dies at the End, she shared her first featured track, "Super Thicc," a humorous but powerful tune full of oddball flexing and mellow hooks. The song drew significant attention for the rapper, and Payday issued two other tracks, "I Don't Cry" and "Disco Dancing," before 2019 was up. 2020 saw the release of two four-song EPs, the P.U.K.E. Tapes, Vols. 1 and 2, as well as the more-refined mixtape It's Just Music. The third P.U.K.E. Tapes and the compilation House of P.U.K.E. appeared in 2021, followed by Rap in a Can, which contained the Danny Brown collaboration "Vampire." "White Mercedes" arrived in 2022. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
