Biography

A member of a substantial family of musicians, Edward was a chorister at the Temple Church in 1843 and soon thereafter became the organist and choirmaster. The music at Temple Church, under his direction and a recent restoration, became a model for other church choirs throughout England. Hopkins helped to found the College of Organists and the Musical Association. His treatise, "The Organ: its History and Construction," is employed today as a wealthy source on the history of the organ. "The Organist and the Choirmaster" was a periodical initiated by Hopkins. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
