As the court organist for Leopold I, 1683, Richter taught the children of the emperor, and, subsequently, two of the future emperors of Austria, Joseph I and Karl VI. Prior to his service at the royal court, Richter was the organist at a Cistercian monastery and a prefect for the choirboys. As an organist and composer Richter was highly respected for his keyboard music. The pieces that he scored for the keyboard were primarily suites that all began with a prelude and fugue and continued through various dance forms. His compositions were influenced by Froberger and Poglietti as well as the new styles emanating from Fux. During the Counter-Reformation Ricther's compositions for the Latin school plays were effectively used to promulgate the ideas of the Church and gained immense support in Austria during the seventeenth century. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
