Biography

Hailing from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Miles Anthony Avery is a multi-instrumentalist with compositions drenched in neo soul with subtle hints of hard bop twinged jazz. After being encouraged to begin his musical journey on trumpet by his father, Avery would go on to be an award winning trumpet and euphonium player under the tutelage of the late Oscar D. Watts and the late Rossie L. Thompson at Central High School in Tuscaloosa. While there, he would also dabble in piano and drums. He joined a local jazz band with friend, saxophonist Loyd Watson, Jr., at the age of seventeen. Avery enrolled in the Jazz Studies program at the University of Alabama in the early nineties. While there, he played in most of the musical ensembles there, including the marching band, where he played sousaphone; the symphonic band, where he played euphonium; the jazz ensemble, where he played drums, and the lower brass choir, where he played tuba. This musical led to him playing with several local bands on drums and even garnering an audition to play for The Temptations Revue. After moving back and forth between Dallas, Texas, and Tuscaloosa, Avery would settle in suburban Atlanta, where he would continue to pursue his musical endeavor of merging several genres and making it palatable to the average listener. He has played at several churches on both drums and piano, and has taken part in several bands while in the suburban West Atlanta area, including his maiden voyage known as The Minor 11th’s.
