Biography

Jongo da Serrinha is a traditional music group founded by Mestre Darcy Monteiro and his mother Vovò Maria Joana (also well known for being Clara Nunes' spiritual mother) in the Serrinha Favela in the northern suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. The main objectives of the group have been to preserve the traditional Jongo rhythm which was brought by the Bantu slaves from African when they were shipped to work on the plantations. The traditional rhythm has been updated with the addition of harmonies, and in recent years through new compositions
