The Psalms of David

Biography

Though Lloyd's musical compositions were regarded as uneventful, they were similar to those of S.S. Wesley whom he replaced as organist of Gloucester Cathedral. Some of Lloyd's music demonstrates an understanding for both instrumental and vocal ambience, particularly "Alcestis" set for men's chorus, flute and harp. Lloyd was a distinguished organist and musician even though his compositions may have lacked luster. As stated he was the organist for Gloucester Cathedral; he also served as the conductor of the Gloucestershire Philharmonic Society, the Oxford Choral Society, the Oxford Symphony Orchestra, and the Three Choirs Festival of Gloucester. Lloyd also taught organ and composition at the RCM, taught at Eton College and was the organist of the Chapel Royal at St. James. He was afforded these opportunites not only because of his talent but also because of his scholarship having received the BMus in 1871, and DMus in 1892 from Oxford. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
