Biography

The Canadian cellist Alexandre Foster, based in Basle, has been recognized for both his refined approach to music-making and his high versatility of playing. As a Baroque and modern cellist, he has, over the years, performed with leading artists in both fields in some of the most prestigious halls in Europe. An enthusiastic chamber musician, he is a founding member of the Calvino Trio. The ensemble was awarded the first prize “Norbert Schenkel” in 2015 at the Jeunesses Musicales Competition (Switzerland), and in 2016 the first prize at the ORPHEUS Swiss Chamber Music Competition. Furthermore, Alexandre Foster is solo cellist with the Baroque ensemble Les Passions de l’Âme, and since 2019 he has been a member of the Basler Streichquartett. His extensive discography includes the first recording on period instruments of Beethoven’s piano quartets (Dynamic) and the complete recording of Biber’s Harmonia artificiosa-ariosa (deutsche harmonia mundi), which received worldwide critical acclaim. Alongside his career as a performer, he is also very much in demand as a teacher. Having spent more than four years at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart in Stuttgart and Berne’s Hochschule der Künste, he now teaches at the Berne Conservatory. He is regularly invited to lead masterclasses across Europe.
