Biography

Matthew Killough was raised in South Georgia with several generations of roots in central and south Alabama. Traditional music is a well known and celebrated aspect of life in this region, and he absorbed it naturally, with traditional country songs and church hymns ever present in the background. He developed an obsession with Led Zeppelin’s acoustic folk songs in his early 20s, which led to a deep appreciation for English and Irish folk music and introduced him to Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Roy Harper, Paul Brady, and Bert Jansch among others.
In the songs on his first outing, one can hear the familiar echoes of Mississippi John Hurt and John Fahey in his finger-style guitar. More important, however, are the stories told and Killough’s unique voice which bring to mind enigmatic 70’s folkie Willis Alan Ramsey. The dusky drawl of Killough’s voice reflects the Deep South and his long family history in one of the cradles of American music.
Killough moved to Nashville in 2018 after spending 12 years in Colorado. He plays regularly at small clubs for a growing group of admirers who show up on hushed evenings to hear this solitary voice invoke centuries of cultural musical memory into the present moment.
