Biography

Thaxter, out of San Diego, California has been making music under various names for close to two decades. He spent his childhood in a paranormal hotbed called the Bridgewater Triangle in Massachusetts, and began using that as inspiration for dark, introspective music. A deep obsession with reggae from the 70s and 80s led to the formation of Dubbest, a group of school friends set on making authentic reggae music in the vein of the original greats: King Tubby, Dennis Brown, etc. Ryan sings lead vocals in Dubbest while holding down the keyboards. After receiving a music degree from University of Massachusetts in Boston in 2014, Dubbest began touring. The traveling was so eye-opening that they decided to move in 2016 to San Diego, California. During COVID, Ryan started building a home studio and making new types of music by himself, often basing songs on layers of improvisation. These songs use some of the principles of modal jazz, and build energy through layers, melodies and improvisational changes as opposed to typical verse-chorus song structure and chord changes. The record features nine cuts of edgy yet ambient, moody yet danceable space-rock. Every sound on Rewind was thought of, written, engineered and performed by Ryan himself, aside from one epic vocal performance from Ryan’s brother Conor James. Ryan continues to tour and write music with Dubbest as well as under the name Thaxter.
