Lead by the jazzy sax player of the dub band Zenzile, Sweet Back is a threesome playing what they call "handmade drums, double bass and sax." Raggy and his colleagues Mehdi (drums) and Kham (double bass) met in the city of Angers, France, where they composed their first album Amok between January 1999 and January 2000. The album was signed on Soshin Sounds, Kyu's own records label. Out in 2000, the album was strangely distributed in France by La Baleine, a firm rather specialized in electronic music than in cool groove. The vibrations of the trio sound like Angelo Badalamenti's, bringing to mind images of smoky bars, Cadillac cars in slow motion, and misty nights. Although they convey this strong atmosphere of jazz, the double bass airs are sometimes similar to the drum'n'bass style recalling melodies as heady as in Red Snapper's masterpiece Reeled and Skinned. ~ Romain Guillou, Rovi
