Biography

The slightly psychedelic, folk, lo-fi rock and totally D.I.Y. music of The Weary Band makes it tricky to put them into any kind of nutshell. This could be due to the music tastes of the four members, (Alex Blain, Tim Calleja, Philip Collings and Andrew Smith) which range from The Stooges to Enya. It may also have something to do with the bands' focus being solely on how best to play and record Tim's songs and never on passing trends. The band attracted a lot of interest after producing two wildly different demos under the names Valley Forge (loud, grungy rock) and The Weary Band (folk). Tim once received a phone call from an A&R scout, saying how much he loved The Weary Band; that he was coming to the next gig and had he heard of another great Bristol band called Valley Forge? Following the advice of the Super Furry Animals' manager, they continued to do everything themselves; recording 4 albums, a children's musical called 'The Lovely Yellow Car' and releasing a demo compilation, 'The Man's a Freak'. With sporadic encouragement from such diverse fans as Lauren Laverne, Andy Partridge, Joe Boyd, Harry Hill and the excellent people at Split Music, The Weary Band keep working through Tim's never-ending songbook. The Day That You Change is their latest album and their first made in a professional studio. In addition to The Weary Band; Andrew writes and plays with Pup Tent; Phil with The Gin Birkins and his solo project Dear Light and Tim records as The King's Mountain.
