Hannah Read’s music straddles both sides of the Atlantic. She is a versatile collaborator and forges her own singular musical landscape that draws from American and Scottish folk traditions as well as from contemporary indie-pop and rock. An award-winning fiddler, guitarist, singer and composer, Hannah leads her own band and is an in-demand musician on both sides of the Atlantic. Hannah's forthcoming album The Fungi Sessions Vol. 1 was a commission from Edinburgh University - an album of fungi-inspired instrumental compositions, which will be released on October 20th, 2023. Throughout the album, Hannah plays fiddle, electric & acoustic guitar, and is joined by a talented cast of musicians including Michael Starkey on clawhammer banjo & guitar, Nickel Creek's Jeff Picker on upright bass and sound design, mixed and mastered by Charles Van Kirk. This new record follows her critically acclaimed solo album, Way Out I'll Wander (feat. Sarah Jarosz & Jefferson Hamer) Appalachian old-time duo album with Michael Starkey, Cross the Rolling Water, and the BBC Folk Award winning album Songs Of Separation (feat. Eliza Carthy & Karine Polwart). Equally at home improvising on fiddle, playing Appalachian old-time music or delivering finely wrought original songs, she is an artist who can’t be pinned down to one continent, one city, one project, one mode of expression.
