Young Shields is a songwriting project led by poet and songwriter Ned Younger, recorded in London with friend and collaborator Peter Lyons (Peter & Kerry, LA Salami), and in ongoing collaboration with trumpeter Sam Warner (Riot Jazz, Don’t Problem). In a voice that only occasionally rises above the conversational, Young Shields shares lyrics of rare depth and intimacy over achingly melancholy soundscapes of crunching brass, washed out guitars and warm synths. Returning regularly to themes of what it means to live, love, grow older, and contribute, in an increasingly complex world, these songs invite you to slow down with them. Named after a Casiotone for the Painfully Alone song, and drawing inspiration from the lush electronics of Deptford Goth, the bitter poetry of Silver Jews’ David Berman, and the storytelling heritage of the British folk tradition, Young Shields stitches together a singular but modest, quiet but moving contribution to the current pop landscape.
