Paul Benney, a polymath and multi-disciplined artist, has worked as an artist, digital/projection artist and musician in both the U.S. and U.K. and is represented in public collections world-wide including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Australia, The National Portrait Gallery UK, The Royal Collection UK. Although Benney has played with many other musicians over the years, at 64 years of age he has only just started to release his own music (Tree of Ghosts) recently with contributions from collaborators such as Nitin Sawhney @jamesribbans, Jazzi Sirius , Aref Durvesh , @sarahsarhandi and Zhenya Strigalev @sashaworral. This loose collective is called SALLIS A member of the Neo-Expressionist group of the 1980’s in New York’s East Village, Benney played with underground bands in the East Village and midtown clubs such has the Pyramid Lounge, Danceteria and the Palladium. As a painter he became known in the exploding art scene in NYC for his depictions of stygian themes and dark nights of the soul. Also one of the UK’s leading portrait artists, he has painted many prominent cultural and political figures including Sir Mick Jagger, Queen Elizabeth ll and the State Portrait of the current Queen Camilla for Buckingham Palace. Benney has twice won the Public Choice award at the National Portrait Gallery Portrait Awards. SALLIS/Paul Benney
