Biography

Noel Edison is a Canadian choral conductor. He started his training as a chorister in the boys choir at St. Simon’s Church in Toronto, and he founded a girls choir at Jarvis Collegiate, where he graduated in 1978. He received his music degree in 1985 from Wilfrid Laurier University in Kitchener-Waterloo. Following college, he moved to Elora, Ontario, to study piano with Victor Martins and went on to study choral conducting with Robert Shaw, Helmuth Rilling, David Willcocks, Ned Hanson, and John Aldis. Edison is primarily known as the founder and conductor of the Elora Festival Singers, and he is the artistic director of the Elora Festival, a four-week summer series started in 1979. In gratitude for his work with the community of Elora, Edison received the Prime Minister’s Young Canadian Achiever’s Award in 1982. Since 1984, Edison has also served as the organist and choir director at the church of St. John the Evangelist in Elora. He made the Elora Festival Singers the core of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, which he has conducted since 1997. In 2002, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Guelph, and in 2009, he received the Order of Ontario.
